Major Learning Outcome #4- Secondary Cultural Knowledge
During my time in Spain, something that was very prevalent throughout the city was the Islamic architecture, art,
and cultural influence. I was constantly amazed by the buildings, streets, and sights that made Granada what it
is. The most impactful architectural wonder was the Alhambra, a great and ancient palace that resides in the
center of the city. I toured the Alhambra five times and was fascinated by its art aesthetic and intricate décor.
In addition to this, I took an Islamic history and culture course at the The Centro de Lenguas Modernas in
Granada. The course covered the basic concepts of the Islamic religion, the Islamic conquest of Spain, some of
the Islamic architectural masterpieces of Spain, and the early civilization of the city of Granada. This course was
especially interesting to me because it connected the dots and answered many of the questions that were
generated in my head through my daily life in Spain.
I lived in the Albaycin neighborhood of Granada, which happened to be the oldest region of the city other than the
Alhambra itself. The Albayzin played a very important role in the early Islamic reign of the city and the initial
expansion of the city. I received copies of the Albayzin weekly, which spoke of some of the important issues of
the neighborhood including; deterioration of ancient buildings, graffiti, and stray animals.
