Major Learning Outcome #2- Language and Linguistic Knowledge
Language and Linguistic knowledge is something that was constantly developing through my coursework in the
Spanish major. Each and every class taken helped promote my overall understanding of the structure of the
Spanish Language. Some courses, however, contributed more to this understanding than others. Before leaving
for Spain, I took SPAN202 which was my first course in advanced Spanish grammar. I was introduced to topics
and grammar components that would prove to become critical in verbal communication.
Once in Spain, I took an advanced Spanish grammar class at The Centro de Lenguas Modernas in Granada.
This course followed a very fast paced structure and moved from basic grammar concepts all the way to some of
the most difficult such as the pluscuamperfecto, and many subjunctive tenses. We were also given explanations
of some of the most common colloquial expressions of Granada.
At the Centro de Lenguas Modernas, I also took a Spanish Phonetics course. This course was an introduction
into the components of phonetics such as, morphology, syntax, and others. It explained some of the phenomena
that occur in southern Spain such as the thetheo and the dropping of syllables. We also covered the usage of
occlusive and fricative consonants and vowels, how to write in a phonetical form, and pronunciation of complex
words.
