Major Learning Outcome #1- Language Proficiency
Advanced Spanish Grammar- I took advanced Spanish grammar at The Centro de Lenguas Modernas in Granada
Spain. This class covered all of the tenses and grammatical components of Spanish that I had learned prior to
this class. It then went further and explored some of the more complicated forms of speech such as future
subjunctive, past subjunctive, and plusperfect. These tenses helped refine my understanding of the Spanish
Language and gave me the ability to communicate all of my thoughts and ideas into the Spanish language. This
course primarily focused on the writing and reading aspect of the language. Tests were extensive representations
of the student’s ability to create and properly pair complicated verb forms in context with familiar expressions.
Advanced vocabulary was also a component of this course.
Speaking and conversation- This course was also taken at the Centro De Lenguas Modernas. The class focused
on speaking and critical thinking skills in Spanish. The class size was very small, creating an intimate
environment where students were able to group up and discuss current political and social news. Pronunciation,
articulation, and demonstration of proper grammar were largely the emphasis of the course. The friendly and
positive environment of this course was what made it very effective. Students, including myself, felt comfortable
speaking and were not discouraged by the fear of making errors. I was able to absorb a vast amount of
previously unfamiliar vocabulary in this course, and gain the confidence needed to use these words and
expressions in public.
My participation in the California State University International Program in Granada, Spain was the largest
contributor to my fulfillment of the language proficiency outcome. Before this experience, I had taken only basic
Spanish courses including SPAN101-202. Although I had a basic understanding of the majority of the grammar
concepts, my ability to speak the language was weak. Upon my arrival in Spain, I realized that life would
continue to be difficult if I didn’t put in the extra time to understand this language and gain the confidence to
speak the language in public. Through the courses I completed at The Centro de Lenguas Modernas, and The
University of Granada, I was given the tools I needed to begin assimilating with the Spanish people. The
repetition of daily activities such as shopping for groceries, or walking through the town all contributed to my
learning. My growth and understanding of the language began to increase at an exponential level. Any shyness
and insecurities were easily overcome by the necessity to go about my day. By the end of the eleven months I
spent in Granada, I had reached an advanced level of speaking, reading, writing, and listening of the Spanish
language.
