Flores: Service Learning
Service learning
For the service learning requirement I went to The Citizenship Program located in Salinas. My experience working with adults was rewarding. I really enjoyed helping these people because they were nice, polite, and they were willing to learn. The section or class that I was given was supposed to be taught in English because all those people would present their test in English. Even though that was the English class, just a couple of students knew how to speak English. Since the majority of the students were Spanish speakers I was in charge of helping them to improve their English by translating and explaining them the meaning of the questions in Spanish. In other words, my goal was to make them understand the one hundred citizenship questions. I also applied my knowledge in grammar to teach them how to write in English. However, based on my experience I can say that being a tutor was really meaningful to me because, I felt a responsibility to make them pass their citizenship test. Even though I was not being paid, I felt the social responsibility of teaching them right. As tutor I always encouraged my students to be polite, especially toward the new students. I think that respect was a key concept when tutoring them, because since some of them did not know how to speak English they could feel intimidated by those that could pronounce the answers perfectly. Finally, I enjoyed my experience as tutor. After this experience I am considering to get my master and my credential so I can teach adults.
