Flores: MLO4
MLO 4
Secondary cultural knowledge
To fulfill this MLO I took JAPN 314: Visualizing Japan. Through this class I learned some aspects of Japanese
culture that changed the way I see Hispanic culture. Before this class I did not know how other cultures could be
so different than western cultures. Definitively this class opened my mind, now I can say that I am more
sensitive toward cultures, I can understand more easily their beliefs and their way of thinking. I saw many in
class videos that helped me to visualize Japan. Through these videos I understood many concepts such as their
beliefs, values, philosophies, and ideas. I also had the opportunity to talk to exchanged students from Japan and
ask them questions regarding their culture. I had the opportunity to go to the tea ceremony here in campus. This
event gave me the opportunity to learn and experience this important tradition by actually participating in it rather
than reading about it. Through the ceremony I learned about the origins of the tea ceremony and the meaning of
it. I had the chance to eat sweets and drink that special tea. At the beginning of the ceremony I purified my soul
by washing my hands. However, as I mention before through this class I learned a lot about Japanese culture in
general but, definitively I would like to keep learning more about Japan. After I complete my degree I would like
to go to Japan and see/experience all the things I learned in class. However, I did not really face any major
challenges because the class videos and the teacher explained the topics clearly. Through lectures I learned
about Japan’s history and religion, this part of the class at some point became challenging because their religion
is totally different from the Christian religion.
